History - What makes us special Doug and Marika moved here from New York City in order to restore this property, formerly one of several properties built at the turn of the last century when oil was first discovered at Drake's Well in western PA. This was the era before cars, and oil was sent to refineries via an underground pipeline. Pumping stations were needed every fifty miles along the long route to keep pressure on the line so that the oil could reach its destination. Pump House B&B is one of the only properties in which the original homes of the foremen and the large brick buildings remain. Doug single-handedly restored one of the buildings that originally housed huge steam engines that put pressure on the pipeline to keep the oil moving. Your suite is what used to be the blacksmith's shop and your kitchen table is where the anvil once stood! The rest of the building functions as an art studio where Doug pursues his work and also teaches drawing, ceramics, and stained glass classes. In the above right photo, see the stained glass light fixture he made. Doug also restored one of the foreman's houses, and this is where the innkeeper family lives. This Old House magazine felt it was unique enough to feature the property in its July/August issue in 2004. Visit and experience a piece of PA history.
